Knowing how to read a tape measure, measuring tape, ruler, measuring wheel and distance measure is crucial to any project! It will determine if you will need to make one cut (get it right the first time) or many cuts and if your cuts are to long or to short. Measuring tools are a lifeline to anyone working with their hands. Either in construction, painting, remodeling, tailoring, carpentry, sewing, woodworkers, cabinet makers, landscaping etc. Measurement reading will determine if your project will be a success or failure.
Conventional Paint and VOCs

When you open a can of conventional paint what you'll see is a creamy blend of plasticizers, adhesives, hardeners, pigments, biocides, drying accelerators, solvents and more. The solvents used in conventional paints are Volatile Organic Compounds. VOCs help hold the ingredients in a blended state while the paint is liquid, but they escape to the air when the paint is applied. Outdoors, VOCs combine with other airborne pollutants to create smog. Indoors, VOCs and plasticizers contribute to unhealthy indoor air, and extended exposure to these hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) can lead to respiratory and metabolic illness, headaches and a host of other disorders. Conventional paints may continue emitting trace portions of VOCs, biocides and plasticizers for more than a year after application.

Low-VOC Paints

EPA regulations allow interior water-based house paints, for instance, to contain up to 250 grams of VOCs per liter of paint. Many communities have set the bar lower; in San Francisco, flat wall paint is limited to 50 grams per liter (g/L). Some paint brands feature house paints with 50 g/L VOCs, and paints that are free of VOCs altogether are now common as well. Paint companies often tout these products as an environmentally friendly option, but the eco-reality is a bit more complicated. These products may still contain HAPs, and adding colorants to some low-VOC paints can kick the VOC measurement up as high as 190 g/L.

Knockdown Texture is a wall and ceiling finishing textured application. Knockdown texture is created by watering down joint compound to a sour cream consistency. A trowel is then used to apply the joint compound. The joint compound will begin to form stalactites as it dries. The trowel is then run over the surface of the drywall, knocking off the stalactites and leaving the mottled finish.

A much more common, and faster technique is to apply the texture mud (which is slightly different from joint compound, in that it has less shrinkage upon drying) with a texture machine – a compressor which sprays mud instead of paint. This applies what is referred to as a splatter coat. The use of a compressor allows this to be applied to walls as well as ceilings. When knocking this down, the mud is allowed to dry for a short period, then skimmed with a knockdown knife – a large, usually plastic (to reduce noticeable edges) knife.

Knockdown texture reduces construction costs because it conceals imperfections in the drywall that result from the use of lower-skilled drywall installers.

Apply heat to the tile to soften the adhesive (glue or paste) by using a hair dryer, heat lamp, flood light or a small portable heater. Use caution when using heat. Heat can cause tiles to melt, warp, even catch fire! Apply tile at a safe distance. After tile has become soft, use a scraper or putty knife to lift and peel off tile. Clean area of all old adhesive and dirt. Apply new adhesive and lay new tile in place. Press down on tile to spread out adhesive and then place a small object or small weight to hold tile in place until adhesive dries (minimum 24 hours).
Fixing drafts around windows, gaps in woodwork, seal a sink, leaking gutters, basement drafts, cranked concrete, spaces around the tub, and dozens of other problems in your home, is as easy as inserting a tube of caulk in a caulk gun and squeeze away! Even though it looks easy, doing a professional caulking joint or also called a caulk line or bead of caulk, takes a little technique. But, first you need to find the correct caulking for your project. At your local hardware store or home center you'll find several shelves stacked with a variety of caulks. With the types of materials used in building a house. These materials expand and contract with changes in humidity and climate. Like the house settling and shifting foundation, or beams sagging and causing cracks. Because of these movements, caulk should be durable and flexible. Caulk should have 3 key properties: 1. It must remain flexible as it ages. 2. It must stretch and recover it's original shape when materials expand and contract. 3. It should stick firmly to the material being sealed and not peel off. There's two types of caulking that do this and works on most projects and they are Latex/Acrylic and Silicone caulking. Latex/Acrylic caulk contains a wide range of ingredients like "polymers" (acrylic) adhere well to porous materials like wood and concrete. Latex/Acrylic are most popular because they clean up with water (unlike silicone) and user friendly and paintable. The quality and performance of latex caulk varies on grade and character of the polymers. The higher quality latex caulk adhere better and stay flexible longer and cost more. Silicone caulk excels on non-porous surfaces, it's flexible and last a long time. Silicone caulking is great for surfaces like: glass, metal, plastic, glazed tile and all other smooth non porous surfaces. The best performing silicone caulks are 100% silicone caulk. They cost more and come in two forms: acid-cure and neutral-cure. Silicone has a strong sent to it. This sent is from the acid reaction that causes the silicone to cure. The new neutral-cure silicone doesn't have the same side effects as the acid-cure silicone so it sticks well to plastic and concrete and can not be painted. Neutral-cure silicone are even more expensive then the acid-cure. Neutral-cure silicone is good for vinyl siding and expands and contract with changes in temperature. Once you choose the right caulk for your project, applying it is the next step. First stuff a piece of foam backer rod into a deep gap. Next run a bead of caulk about half as thick as the gap it spans. Most people squeeze a thick bead of caulk in the gap, hoping that will do the trick. This isn't the best way (depending on size of gap), but if you use the best caulk, it should work. As materials expand and contracts the gaps widen and narrows and the caulk will stretch about 25% in a well formed joint. Using a finger (latex caulk) a caulking tool or spoon will give you an hour glass or curved shape and give your joint a professional look.
You find mildew growth just about anywhere in your home. From your bedroom closet, bathroom ceiling, kitchen walls and all the way down to your basement. Cleaning it is simply, but keeping it from coming back and getting rid of it permanently can be tough and in some cases nearly impossible! Mildew not only grows on the surface of your painted walls, but underneath on the drywall and as deep as inside your walls. To kill this pesty fungus, use a mixed solution of bleach, trisodium phosphate (TSP) and water. Before you began using solution, wear safety glasses, rubber gloves to avoid skin irritation and respirator mask for chemical odor. Mix solution in a bucket and use a rag or sponge on soft surface and a scrub brush on hard surfaces.

Preparation:

By applying oil-based primer to walls, this will protect walls from moisture and make future stripping easier. Once primer has dried, lightly sand walls. Next, paint sizing on walls with a roller and brush so paste can adhere. A color tint will appear to show an even coverage. Use a level to draw a vertical line from the ceiling to the floor starting 8 inches from the corner. Then draw vertical lines from the ceiling to the floor one width of the roll of wallpaper. Next measure the height from the baseboard to the ceiling. Mark off this distance plus 4 to 5 inches on the first strip of wallpaper. Cut the first strip to the correct length. Increase the length of subsequent strips as necessary to match patterns. Apply paste to the first strip of wallpaper, starting from the top. There should be an arrow to indicate which end is up, if not turn strip over to face side to check the pattern. Now double over (fold) about 1/6 of the paper's length from one end so the paste side is touching. NOTE: Don't crease the fold or it will show when the paper is hung. From the other end, fold over about half of the remaining length, almost touching the top and bottom edges. TIP: This called "booking"

Wallpaper Hanging Steps:

Drape paper over your arm and take it to your starting wall. Apply the top of the wallpaper about 1-1/2 to 2 inches over the ceiling line. Allow the overage to extend onto the ceiling, unfurl the top section, holding the right edge against your vertical line and press into place. Next, using a wallpaper brush, brush paper to stick to the wall and push out air bubbles. Working from top to bottom and from the center to the sides. Now unfold the bottom half, holding it along the vertical line, press and brush quickly! The may become dry and the air bubbles will be harder to be removed. Next, press the blade of your spackle knife into the ceiling joint to crease the paper. Then cut off the excess paper along the crease with a utility knife, using spackle knife as a straight edge and wipe off excess paste. Brush strip of wallpaper again and cut excess paper at the bottom, using spackle knife as a straight edge. Position subsequent strip on the wall about 1/4 inch away, then slide it gently into place. If paper doesn't slide easily , gently lift paper and re-position it and then brush. Once the wallpaper has been up for 15 minutes, press the seams firmly with a roller and wipe off excess paste with a lint-free rag.
When painting two or more rooms, use colors in the same family. You may start with a Primary Color in one room, Tertiary Color in another room, and a Secondary Color in the next room. Using this system makes for a uniformed transition.

Drywall taping can be not only frustrating, but also messy! You'll need some basic drywall tools before starting the taping process. You'll need a 4" ,6" and 8" putty knife, mud pan, drywall tape, 10" and 12" drywall trowel, step ladder (6' to 8'), mixing drill, sanding sponge, drop clothe or a roll of plastic and joint compound (5 gallons +). Once you've laid out your drop clothes, fixed any damaged corners (scoring) or holes. Have all corner beads in place and dimpled all screw holes, you're ready to begin! There are different types of drywall tape you can purchase and also the same with joint compound, but we'll discuss that at a later date. Mix joint compound with water at the manufacturers recommendation or to a creamy type consistency. FIRST COAT: Fill mud pan and apply mud to the butt joints first (vertical lines) using the 4" putty knife. Then apply the tape over the mud, pressing the tape onto the mud with your finger tips. Use your 4" knife at the stopping point to cut the tape. By holding your knife on top of the tape against the drywall panel and pull tape. This will give you a clean cut, without using a utility knife, which can cut into the drywall panel. Now go back to your starting point, hold tape edge with your finger tips and take your putty knife (hold it at an angle) and squeeze out the excess mud. Repeat the same steps with the tapered joints (horizontal lines). Now for taping inside corners, fold tape in half along the crease line. Apply mud to the inside corners, apply tape and squeeze out excess mud one side at a time (be careful not to rip tape). Fill in screw holes (fastener holes), by forming a line of mud upward over the row of drywall screws and then scrape off in a downward motion. Note: After every application on mud, clean putty knife or trowel off, by scraping it across the side of the mud pan. This allows you to scrape the mud off to have a clean and feathered out tape line. Now some contractors pass on taping the corner beads, but for the D.I.Y. I would recommend taking this step to avoid future corner bead cracks. Now that you have applied all your mud, let applications dry to the recommended time by the manufacturer. Once the mud has dried, using a sanding sponge or paper. Lightly sand any imperfections. SECOND COAT: Again mix joint compound to the consistency of creamy potatoes. Load mud pan and apply mud on the top side of the tape with a 8" putty knife and remove excess mud (butt joints first and tapered joints second). Applying mud to corners this time is a little more trickier! Apply mud to one side of tape on the ceilings with a 6" knife and alternate the sides for the wall corners. Fill in the corner beads and the center. Using a 10" trowel, smooth out the mud and feather the edges. Let dry and sand imperfections. THIRD COAT: Now repeat the steps given for the second coat. Apply mud to the butt joints first and then the tapered joints using a 10" or 12" trowel. Applying mud to the other side of the tape with a 6" knife. Using a 12" trowel apply another coat to the corner bead. Let dry and sand entire surface to a smooth finish.
If your deck is gray, weathered and discolored, but not yet deteriorated. Hammer down any nails and loose boards. Spray deck with bleach or a cleaning solution. The solution will make a foaming action to let you know it's working. Let foam work into the wood for about 5 to 10 minutes or what's recommended by the manufacturer. Don't allow the solution to dry. Scrub with a brush and then rinse. Let the deck dry for at least 48 hour. Then apply a semitransparent stain or clear finish.

Using a Airless Paint Sprayer will take some time to master. Doing it incorrectly will make a mess, so take some time to practice. Using a piece of cardboard or plywood and follow these techniques.

Don't arc your arm; this may cause an uneven application. Move your arm from side to side and at the end of each stroke bend your wrist to keep an even stroke. Keep the gun 8 to 10 in. from the surface being painted. Two thin coats are better than one heavy one, which may drip, run or sag.

Spray painting require wind-free conditions. Even if you've covered the shrubs, masked the windows and trim and made sure the kids and pets aren't in the area to be painted, a breeze will carry a fine spray to where you don't want it. Spaying the sides of your home is more easier to paint then trim.
Use painters masking tape and plastic or newspaper to cover windows, doors and any surface that isn't to be painted or the same color as the sides of your house.

Just as you would paint the interior of a house, the doors, windows and trim are painted last and are the most time consuming. You can spray the trim, but probably isn't worth the time it takes to mask off the newly painted siding or to use a handheld shield; a brush, roller or a combination is probably quicker.

When painting doors, use the "inside-out" technique. Doors, either flush or panel, can be painted quickly with a roller and brush. Brush in all thedifficult surfaces first, then cover as much as you canwith the roller. Use the brush immediately after using a roller to give the paint a grain that will match the wood, across and up and down. It may be best to remove door from hinges and lay it down on saw horses or table. Paint can be applied quicker and thicker with-out the danger of paint sagging. Allow the painted side to dry thoroughly before turning it over to paint other side. Use padding to protect the painted surface.

Frist, cover all tree, bushes and surfaces you want to protect. Second, make all repairs in surface. Scape or sand any peeling paint or surface area. Patch the area after removing peeling paint and then sand. Sweep up dust from area and apply caulking to gaps. Use wood filler or patching material for wholes. Allow to dry and sand until flush with surface. Sand any area that has a gloss to get adhesion. Clean all mildew and stains with a cleaner using a pump sprayer and sponge. Wash all surface with a power washer or water hose (top to bottom and side to side) and allow to dry.

Painter's tape is great product for protecting those area and things you do not want painted. Before apply paint to a surface, make sure to apply tape to all that needs protection like: baseboards, trim, light switches, electric outlets, alarm controls etc. Getting paint off these surfaces can be a pain and only makes your job harder. When applying painters tape to a surface apply even pressure to the ends to give tape a secure lock. This helps prevent paint from leaking behind the tape.
